After I shared a story yesterday about one of my inspirations, Sergeant Maiga Auguste, she reached out and shared a powerful story about someone who inspired her.
That person is Officer Sylvia Harris.
Listening to Sergeant Auguste talk about Officer Harris was moving because it reminded me how often the people who pave the way are not always the ones standing in the spotlight. Sometimes their greatest accomplishment is simply making it possible for others to follow.
Officer Sylvia Harris made history as the first Black female officer in the history of the Port Saint Lucie Police Department. At a time when those opportunities were far from guaranteed, she stepped forward with courage and determination. Because she did, many others were able to see themselves in law enforcement and pursue the same path.
From Inspiration to Tribute
Sergeant Auguste shared that many officers looked to Sylvia Harris as a mother figure within the department. She said many people affectionately called her “mom” because of her motherly nature. According to Sergeant Auguste, Officer Harris always made time to listen and talk with people, whether they were fellow officers or members of the community who needed guidance.
Breaking Barriers in Law Enforcement
Breaking barriers rarely comes without hardship. Sergeant Auguste spoke about the challenges Officer Harris faced along the way. Yet through it all, those experiences never changed who she was as a person.
She broke the glass ceiling during a time when the path for Black women in law enforcement was extremely difficult. Instead of allowing those obstacles to discourage her, she remained committed to her purpose.
A Legacy That Opened Doors
Her example inspired officers who came after her, including Sergeant Auguste herself, who would later make history as the first Haitian and Black female Sergeant in the Port Saint Lucie Police Department.
Serving the Community Beyond the Badge
Beyond her work in uniform, Officer Harris has always been deeply connected to the community. She founded a nonprofit organization called Breaking Chains, continuing her mission of helping people overcome obstacles and move forward in life. Through this work, she helped empower others to break through the barriers that once stood in front of them.
Sergeant Auguste described her as someone who is straightforward and no nonsense, but also someone who would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. That balance of strength and compassion is what made so many people gravitate toward her.
Why Officer Sylvia Harris Still Matters
Some people do not just live their purpose. They make space for others to discover theirs.
Officer Sylvia Harris broke barriers in law enforcement, mentored those around her, and continued serving the community through leadership and nonprofit work. Her influence created opportunities for others to step forward and pursue careers that once seemed out of reach.
The Strength That Holds Us Together is often found in the people who quietly build the path forward.
Officer Sylvia Harris did exactly that.
