Some people build companies that change the world. Others take the wealth created from that success and use it to change lives. MacKenzie Scott has done both.
Before the world knew the name Amazon, MacKenzie Scott was there at the beginning helping bring the idea to life. In the early 1990s she was working at the New York investment firm D. E. Shaw, where she met Jeff Bezos. When Bezos began discussing his idea of creating an online bookstore, Scott not only supported the vision, she helped make it possible.
In 1994 the two left New York and drove across the country to Seattle while Bezos worked on the business plan during the trip. Scott helped write the early plan and became one of the very first people working on the company. In those early days Amazon was operating out of a garage, and Scott took on many of the essential roles needed to keep the business moving forward. She handled accounting, shipping logistics, early business operations, and even customer service calls while the company was finding its footing.
Those humble beginnings eventually grew into one of the most influential companies in the world.
But the next chapter of MacKenzie Scott’s story may be even more remarkable.
Did You Know: She Has Given Away Billions
After her divorce in 2019, Scott received billions of dollars in Amazon stock. Rather than simply holding onto that wealth, she announced that she intended to give the majority of it away.
Since then she has donated more than seventeen billion dollars to thousands of nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and community programs across the country.
Her giving has touched organizations focused on housing, food security, education, community development, and social services. Many of these groups operate quietly in communities that often struggle to attract large donors.
Did You Know: HBCUs Have Benefited From Her Historic Gifts
Historically Black colleges and universities have been among the institutions that have received significant support from Scott’s philanthropy.
One of the most recent examples is her forty two million dollar donation to Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. The gift represents one of the largest per student donations ever given to an HBCU and provides the university with resources to expand programs and support future generations of students.
For institutions that have long faced funding disparities, gifts like these have the power to reshape opportunities for students.
Did You Know: Her Philanthropy Is Different
MacKenzie Scott’s approach to giving has stood out in the world of philanthropy. Instead of attaching long lists of restrictions to her donations, she often gives unrestricted funding.
This allows organizations to decide for themselves how the money can best serve the communities they support.
Her philosophy is simple. The people already doing the work on the ground usually know best what their communities need.
The Strength That Holds Us Together
MacKenzie Scott helped build a company that transformed global commerce. But her story did not stop with business success.
By choosing to give away billions of dollars to organizations working to uplift communities, support education, and expand opportunity, she has shown what it looks like when success is used to create change far beyond the boardroom.
Sometimes the strength that holds us together is found in people who understand that wealth can build more than companies.
It can build opportunity. It can strengthen communities. And it can open doors for people who may have never had the chance otherwise.
